This week our meeting was a little bit of everything. At the Fort at the weekend, we painted the bottom of drink bottles to look like poppies so at our meeting we did some more for their display.
As well as this, we also painted our favourite aircraft to cover an aspect of the Air Activities badge.
Turtle, one of our leaders, is from Poland and they celebrate their Independence Day the same day that we commemorate Armistice so while we painted our poppies, we also learned about Poland and their independence.
There was also Duplo available to play with to create buildings to complete aspects of the All Around Us badge and we completed the evening with a story and a cake.
As always, check out our Facebook page to see more photos of our evening.
In amongst all this busyness, we also discussed the events coming up. As with last week, our Wednesday meeting wasn't the end of Scouting for the week. Last week it was a Saturday visit for the group to Fort Brockhurst, this week it's a Saturday visit for the Beavers to Paulton's Park and a Sunday visit for the group to 1st Lee-on-the-Solent's Scout Hut across town to take part in JOTA-JOTI. Hopefully we'll have some of our friends from the group join us for this massive worldwide Jamboree.
Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) was first held as part of the fiftieth anniversary of Scouting (1957) and always takes place on the third full weekend of October. Started by a Scout Leader, who also had an interest in amateur radio, it gave the young people of the movement the opportunity to talk with Scouts from all over the world and learn about Scouting in other countries.
In 1995, an Australian Scout, Norvan Vogt, was in the Netherlands as an exchange student. He connected his home Rover Scouts with those he was staying with. The following year, the World Scout Committee decided that their idea should become an official Jamboree and so JOTI, Jamboree on the Internet, was born. Because Scouts everywhere were already connecting one weekend a year via radio waves, it was decided that they could use the same weekend to connect via the internet as well and so the event became known as JOTA-JOTI.
For more information, and to sign up, check out the JOTA-JOTI website. You don't have to be a Scout or a Guide to participate but Scouts and Guides monitor the events and chat rooms for the safeguarding of the young people involved.
Bagheera has signed up to be a JOTA-JOTI Ambassador as well so if you have questions, feel free to send us a message through the page and she'll get back to you.
