This week was all about staged badges. The Squirrels and Beavers worked towards their Digital Maker badge while the Cubs looked at their Community badge. Let's start with the younger sections.
The evening was split into two activities, with a game between the switching. Let's call them Activity A and Activity B.
Activity A involved creating obstacles on a grid, then directing one of the others around their grid using markers on the floor to represent what they'd designed. The grid was 5x4 and they put down images to represent obstacles like rocks, camp fire, the start and the camp site finish. They then had to give their friend directions like one space east, two spaces north etc, to guide them around the obstacles and safely back to camp.
Activity B was a kind of scavenger hunt where they had to look around the meeting place to find images of tech that had been stuck to the wall and identify whether they run with a computer or not. There were things like stairs, digital phones and analogue clocks versus smartphones, bus stops (the ones that tell you how close the next bus is) and self-service check outs.
The game between activities was essentially Simon Says but instead of listening to Simon's instructions, it was Computer Says.
The meeting ended in the usual way with a biscuit and a story. It was then time to head home so the Cubs could have their meeting.
The Cubs' meeting this week was all about Community and the services we have access to in our town. Using a map of Gosport, we located places that serve our town.
We found there are a lot more post offices than we thought and loads of churches too. We marked down places important to the emergency services like the police and fire station, the War Memorial hospital and the ambulance base, as well as GAFIRS. We found our schools (well, most of them because Bagheera missed Peel Common off our map!), libraries and vets.
We also discussed why these services are so important to the community, like the library being a place where we can get more than just books. We can access the internet there, get advice and some of them have coffee shops for meeting up.
Another week over and only one left before half term. January felt like it lasted forever, February is barely started and it already feels like it's flying by!
