1st August 1907: Robert Baden-Powell took a group of about 20 boys to Brownsea Island for a week to conduct his experimental camp. It was at this camp that Scouting as we know it today was born.
Scouts all across the world are encouraged to wear their neckerchiefs on this day to mark Scouting's birthday.
We spent our Scout Scarf Day going for a walk through the Alver Valley doing a Brownsea themed scavenger hunt.
The idea of our walk was to spot things around us that began with letters from the name of the island where Scouting started.
We had an amazing time all along the journey. Some letters were easier to find things for than others. Above are examples Kestrel took photos of, but we also saw the following:
B: Butterflies, bees, brambles, berries, blackberries, bushes, bridge, Beavers, Brian (one of the Squirrels), banana (someone's snack)
R: Reeds, river, raisins (someone's snack)
O: Owls (we didn't expect to see owls!), oak, Otter (one of our leaders)
W: Willow, water
N: Nettles (this one and E were the trickiest!)
S: Signpost, Squirrels, Sam (one of our Beavers), sycamore, snacks
E: Elder
A: Acorns, Alver (the river)
It was a fantastic day! And we walked such a long way. The photos below is the route we took. Maybe you'd like to follow it too and see what you can find? (The app Admin used to track the distance is a touch out of date, there's no Garden Centre at the start!)
