Go Wild and Health & Fitness

This week was another split week, so first let's look at what the Squirrels got up to: more towards their Go Wild badge.

The evening started off with a little wander outside to check on our bug hotels. Sadly, the rainy weather recently had washed away some of them, but the ones that still had sticks and leaves and things inside held some interesting new friends! We spotted worms, woodlice, even tiny baby snails.

Once we'd checked on all the hotels, it was time to head back inside where we drew the bugs we'd seen and created our own out of cardboard tubes and all sorts of different craft materials including googly eyes, pipe cleaners and stickers.

So that's what the Squirrels got up to, what about the Beavers?

Our evening was about continuing with our Health and Fitness badge.

We started off by checking how to find our pulse so we could feel it at a normal rate. We then played a running around game called Fish.

The idea of the game is each Beaver was given the name of a sea creature; in this case, crab, lobster or jellyfish. If their creature was called, they had to run round the outside of the circle and back to their place. If fish was called, they all had to run round the circle. Afterwards we checked our pulses again to find they felt faster for the running!

Next, it was time for some mindfulness. We all sat around the table to do an activity sheet. On it were breathing exercises, a wordsearch, colouring and an exploration involving their senses: what could they hear, smell, see, feel and taste (most of them went to get their drinks for the taste!)

At the end there was more running around where we had to decide which foods were healthy or unhealthy by running to the indicated side of the hall.

We did so much towards some badges, but most excitingly, we met a new friend this week!

Oliver joined us for his first meeting and he seemed keen to get involved! He'll be joining the Squirrels and he went with them to check the bug hotels and got stuck in like he'd been with us for years!
